The other name is a heavy horse that was developed at more or less the same time in both France and Belgium. Its prehistoric horse pallbearers are evident in the primitive skilful structure of its head including a squared off nose.

The Ardennes type draft horse is one of the basic sources of the heavy draft breeds that exist today and they are a true cold-blooded breed.

The Ardennes is one of the oldest breeds of draft horse orginating from the Ardennes area in France/North Western Europe. They are heavy-boned but agile at times, with thick legs that help when plowing fields, pulling stomps, and riding.

The Ardennes' conformation is cob-like, with a strong, compact body, muscled hindquarters, a thickset neck, and a well-shaped head.

The Swedish Ardennes was developed during the 19th century by crossing imported Ardennes (a heave draft breed from Belgium and northern France) with the indigenous North Swedish horse.

Although there is no complete records on the Ardennes breed, it is thought that they were descended from heavy draft horses that were often praised by Julius Caesar in De Bello Gallico. Napoleon valued the breed for their endurance.
