The Ariegeois pony, also known as the Merens, is a breed of mountain pony that is noted for being cold hardy and sturdy.

The always-black Ariegeois is a true mountain pony and is at home in snow and ice and impervious to even the harshest of cold weather. It does not, though, thrive in heat.

The Ariegeois pony a breed of mountain pony that is noted for being cold hardy and sturdy and does not thrive in heat. It is native to the Pyrenees and Ariegeois mountains of Spain and southern France, where the Ariège River flows.

The Ariegeois, also known as the Cheval de Merens or Merens Pony, originated in the mountains of Pyrenees on the eastern edge, between Rousillon and Catalonia. The Ariegeois gets its name from the Ariege River, which runs nearby.

Although the pony has existed in its native Pyrenees and Ariegeois mountain region since prehistoric times, breeders began taking an interest in the ponies around 1908. It was bred to work in the mines of southwestern France and to haul timber.
