The Assateague and Chincoteague are two rare U.S. horse breeds, both of which are nearly identical in physical attributes and characteristics.

- Assateague -
The Assateauge and the Chincoteague are basically the same pony, found mainly on the island of Assateague, and on the neighboring island of Chincoteague, which both lie off the coast of Virginia, America.

Every year, on the last Thursday and Friday in July, Assateague ponies are rounded up and swum across the channel to Chincoteague, where ponies from both islands are sold by auction.

The Chincoteague/Assateague is a feral pony that lives on the two islands off the Virginia and Maryland coast, with the majority of the population living on the wildlife refuge of Assateague island.

The wild horses of Assateague Island are descendents of domesticated animals brought to the island over 300 years ago.

These ponies from Assateague Island are best known for the annual roundup and auction that takes place as a fund-raiser in Chincoteague, Virginia. Chincoteague Ponies live under harsh conditions and are therefore extremely hardy and intelligent.

Descending from the Assateague Island wild horses, the Chincoteague Pony stands on average between twelve and thirteen hands. This is attributed likely from the harsh environments they endure and their poor diets.

There are two theories of how the ponies came to live on Assateague Island. The legend is that a Spanish galleon wrecked off of Assateague Island and the surviving ponies swam to the island.

The ponies live on the islands of Chincoteague and Assateague off the coast of Virginia and Maryland. The Ponies are a race of small hardy horses, compact and good natured.
