In the 19th Century there was an infusion of Boulonnais and Percheron blood, as well as the Ardennais and Trait du Nord, which increased the overall size of the Auxois.
The Auxois owes some of their bloodlines to the Ardennais and the two breeds are very similar in size & shape. In addition to Ardennes blood the Auxois lines contain a cross between Bourguingnon type, Percheron and Boulonnais blood.
Although the Auxois has had a stud book since 1913, it is now considered a rare breed. Today it is still used for heavy draft and farm work.

The Auxois is the old heavy horse of north-eastern Burgundy. It hasexisted since at least the Middle Ages, and seems originally to have been asomewhat smaller and lighter breed. It was used to pull coaches and wasalso valued as a draught horse.

The Auxois comes from the original ancient Ardennais heavy horse and an old Burgundian horse breed. It is larger and more powerful than its larger ancestors, and has slightly finer legs.
The Auxois have a kind, quiet and biddably temperament which, combined with their endurances, makes them highly suitable for heavy draft and farm work.

It has a massive bone structure and a correspondingly strong powerful muscular build. The Auxois from Burgundy is similar in height and bulk to the Ardennais du Nord, but shows clear Percheron and Boulonnais influences.
