Avelignese
The Avelignese of northern Italy is descended from the same native stock as the Haflinger, and is popular for pack-work in the mountains.The Haflinger is the native pony of the Austrian Tyrol.

The Avelignese gets its name from Avelengo, an area of the Alto Adige, which has been an Italian region since 1918. The Avelignese pony is Italy's version of the Haflinger. The two breeds bear a striking resemblance to each other.

It is thought that they were developed by crossing Barb and Arabian horses imported by the Count of Conversano with native horse, Neopolitan, Avelignese and Italian Heavy Draft blood.

The Haflinger is quite similar to the Avelignese breed of Italy, where the Haflinger was originally bred prior to World War I. The Haflinger is noted for its ability to climb in steep mountain regions with agility.

The breed is also called the Avelignese, from the Italian word for Hafling, which is Aveligna or Avelengo.

They are useful and attractive ponies. A working mountain pony much like the Haflinger and the Avelignese. As with all mountain breeds, they are very tough and enduring, as well as being extremly surefooted.
