The center of balance of a horse standing or walking freely lies directly over a point a few inches behind the withers.

The majority of trainers, not all, prefer that the horse is taught only the minimal requirements for racing, while leaving it to the horse to figure out how to balance himself with a rider on his back.

I recently worked with an equine who didn't have a balanced sequential walk and didn't stand still under saddle. I wasn't very pleased to see how the owner mounted or the horse's behavior of not standing to be mounted as well.

The horse should be sound of wind and limb, and give an overall impression of good breeding and balance. It should appear capable of long, sustained work under saddle along with weight carrying ability.

Coupling is smooth and the overall appearance is of a well balanced, smoothly built horse. The girth is deep, with well laid back shoulder and fairly pronounced withers.

The Fjord Horse is easy to ride because of their calm terperaments and easy, balanced gaits.

The horse is to be of straight or sub convex profile, of balance conformation and notable general harmony. They display brilliant aires, are energetic, cadenced and elastic with appreciable elevation and acknowledge facility for collection.

And then there's the balance problem - it's hard to be consistent with the aids without miscuing or unbalancing the horse through the rider's losses of balance.

During our conversation I asked her if she knew of any exercise I might try that would help me with my balance. The first words out of her mouth were "therapeutic horseback riding". Yeah, right.

Action: Trotting and pacing are balanced gaits; the horse in action should appear well balanced front to back.

Their natural balance and good movement also make them very suitable for dressage. The breed is bred along two lines. One is lighter, for competitive riding. The other is heavier, and used in harness and as a riding horse.
