It is not exactly known where the Barb developed, but the breed originated in Northern Africa during the 8th century, about the time that Islamic invaders reached the region.

 


Barb Horse Breed:

The Barb horse breed comprises of desert horses that have been developed in North Africa on the Barbary Coast. These horses display great stamina and hardiness.

The Barb is a light riding horse which originated in the Maghreb region of northern Africa. There are several varieties including Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian.

The Barb is a light riding horse with great stamina. It has a powerful front end, high withers, short back, a sloping, narrow croup, and carries its tail low. It is hardy, with clean legs, and small, round, sound hooves.

The Barb has also been used for creating the Spanish Barb, the American Quarter Horse, the Mustang, the Appaloosa, the Andalusian and the Lusitano, as well as others.

The horses brought to the New World by Columbus were a mix of three breeds - the Spanish Barb, the Spanish Jennet and the Andulusian.

The Andalusian is descended from the Barb horse from the North West African deserts and the Sorraia, a primitive breed of rare horse from Spain.

Such was the nature of the Godolphin Arabian (sometimes called "Barb") who was imported to England in 1730 as well as the Byerley Turk (1683) and the Darley Arabian (1703).

The name derives from the fact that the Quarter Horse was originally raced over a quarter of a mile. It was bred by crossing Arab, Barb and Turk breeds with English Horses, especially the Thoroughbred, to form a compact, heavily muscled horse.

The Canadian Horse or Le Cheval Canadien originated from horses sent to Quebec by King Louis XIV in the late 1600's. These horses, the best from the King's stable, were of French Norman, Breton, Arab, Andalusian and Spanish Barb descent.
