History and Origin of the Breed
The Bashkir Curly dates to 1898 when Peter Damele and his father were riding horseback in the Peter Hanson mountain range in the remote high country of central Nevada, near Austin.

The Bashkir Curly gets it name from the ancient Russian breed, the Bashkir, from which the modern Curly was believed to have descended. However, the American horses may have been incorrectly named.

The exact origin of the Bashkir Curly is one of the greatest mysteries of the horse world. One of the theories, and the source of their name, is that they are descended from the Russian Bashkir.

Bashkir Curly is a breed of horse. Bashkir Curlies (also called American Bashkir Curlies or North American Curly Horses) come in all sizes, colors, and body types but all carry a gene for a unique curly coat of fur.

THE BASHKIR CURLY
Curlies somewhat resemble the early day Morgan in conformation and a number of traits have been found in this unique breed that link them to the primitive horse. Curlies are of medium size. They also come in pony and draft size.

The American Bashkir Curly Registry (ABCR) opened in 1971 with only 21 horses; as of May 2005 there were just over 4,000 Bashkir Curlies in the world, primarily in North America.

ABCR members prefer "Bashkir Curly" while ICHO members lean towards "North American Curly". The addition or removal of 'Bashkir' to the breed name is highly debated. It's said Curly horses were documented in Asian artwork as early as 161 AD.
