The first horses arrived in South Africa in 1653, when four horses were introduced to the Cape area by the Dutch East India Trading Company.
This pony, not native to Basutoland, derives from Arabs and Barbs im-ported by the Dutch East India Company in 1653 and from Arabs, Barbs, Persians and Thoroughbreds imported until early in the 19th century.

The Basuto Pony is found in Lesotho, which is an enclave of South Africa. It is used for exclusively for riding and only cattle are used for Draught purposes.
Basuto ponies are often used for racing or polo now. These have a rather heavy head, a long neck and long, straight back, a straight shoulder, and a muscular, sloping croup.
