From the time of Julius Caesar's occupation of what is now Belgium, the Belgian horse has enjoyed a great reputation as a powerful and versatile horse.
The Belgian derived from the small country of Belgium. The lowlands by the sea required a larger horse for tasks that had to be done around their weightier soils. But there were also lighter tasks that had to be done in the wooded uplands of Ardennes.
