The Belgian horse, Belgian Heavy Horse, or Brabant is a horse breed comes from the Brabant region of Belgium. They are one of the strongest of the heavy breeds.

As the name implies. this breed originated in Belgium. Back in the medieval times, the center of Western Europe became well-known for the large black horses known as "Flemish".

The body is compact with a short, wide back and powerful loins. The quarters are massive, with a characteristic "double muscling" over the croup. The gaskins are heavily muscled and the legs are short and strong.

The Belgian Draft is not only one of the strongest draft breeds, but this breed has also held the world record for the tallest and the largest horses in the world.

The belgian is no "overnight success.

The Belgian Draft Horse is descended from the war horse of the Middle Ages. Its location of origin is Brabant, in what is now Belgium. Belgians, as the breed is known in America, differ slightly from its European ancestor the Brabant.

Most of the early Belgian Draft horses were bay, although chestnut and sorrel and roan followed close behind in popularity. Since the 1920's, however, breeders in the U.S. have bred for the sorrel and roan colors.

It was developed mainly from the Belgian Draft horse. The infusions from the Percheron, Ardennes, Boulonnais and Clydesdale were made to fashion a heavy weight but handsome horse having great power.

The familiar "blond" Belgian Draft horse that we see in the United States has its roots in the Brabant, also known as the Belgian Heavy Draft. This name has been shortened to Belgian for common usage.

The world's tallest living horse is a Belgian Draft named Radar. Radar is a gelding, born in 1998 in Iowa. He stands at 19.35 hands, which means he is approximately 6 foot 7 inches (2 metres) tall at the withers. He weighs over 2,400 lbs (1,088kg).

Arabian blood had influence on the breed as a result of cross with Belgian Draft blood. That was in the 18th century when Belgian Draft was used to increase size and strength of other horse breeds.

The breed’s history began when the Sixth Duke of Hamilton transported six Belgian Draft (or Flemish) and Fresian stallions to Lanarkshire, Scotland -- formerly known as Clydesdale.

Georgia -- The Atlanta Journal carried a story by WillAnderson in its March 3, 1997 edition that a two-ton Belgian draft horsenamed Susie was found lying motionless on her side, her head suspendedfrom a rope.

The Ardennes is a lighter, mountain bred, version of the Belgian Draft horse. It was used in creating the Baltic Ardennes, Russian Heavy Draft and Swedish Ardennes. They may be bay, roan, chestnut, gray or palomino.

They wanted the breeders to only use heavy Belgian Draft horse stallions in order to increase the size of the breed. But the traditional farmers secretly used native stallions. Many foals in this time got forged identity papers.

As long ago as 1916 McCann indicated that sorrel is genetically distinct from chestnut in Belgian Draft Horses.

The heaviest recorded horse (3,400 pounds) was a Belgian, who died in Iowa (USA) in 1948.

The Belgian Draft Horse that is seen a lot in United States has its roots in the Brabant itself but is not as massive as the Brabant but does retain proportions of it.
