Boulonnais Horse Breed Characteristics :
Boulogne District of France is the country of origin of the Boulonnais horse. It is an ancient draft horse that dates before the period of the Crusades.

Boulonnais horse is also known by the name of White Marble Horse. This horse breed is a heavy draft one. Now chiefly the French Government breeds it because of the decrease in the number of these horses.

A neat looking and compact draught horse who combines great strength and power with a superb temperament.

Boulonnais horses are said to be descended from Numidian horses, brought by J. Caesar to North of France, around Boulogne, in 54 B.C., just when he was planning to invade Britain. But this can be a legend.

The Boulonnais is one of the most elegant of all of the draft breeds, known for their milky white coat and luxurious mane and tail, they have unmistakable characteristics. Their blood is often used to improve the stock of other draft breeds.

The Boulonnais originated in the Northwest of France. It is a very ancient breed, although it was not officially recognized as a breed until the 17th century.

The Boulonnais is said to descend from the horses imported by Julius Caesar's legions, which stayed along the coasts of the Pas-de-Calais before invading what is now Great Britain. Much later came the Crusades and the Spanish occupation of Flanders.

In the 19th Century there was an infusion of Boulonnais and Percheron blood, as well as the Ardennais and Trait du Nord, which increased the overall size of the Auxois.

Some believe they are descendants of the original horses found in the region during the Ice Age, others that he is closely related to the Boulonnais horse used in the Roman invasion of Brittany.

Others say that the breed is closely related to the French Boulonnais draft horses that were used in the Roman invasion of Brittany.

Breeders infused Percheron, Boulonnais and Norman blood into the Comtois to further enhance its stock. Then in the 20th century, Ardennais stallions were bred with Comtois mares with positive results.

The Belgian and the Boulonnais horse also had an influence. The breed became recognized as a separate breed of its own at the beginning of the 20th century, and the studbook for the Trait du Nord was established in 1903.

The breed began with rather experimental beginnings - native horses were crossed with the Brabant, the Percheron, and the Boulonnais, with airly unsuccessful results. Finally, the Breton horse was crossed with Italian mares.

From the start of the 19th century the Ardennais were crossed with Arabs to create a high energy horse. These were then further mixed with Percheron, Boulonnais, and Thoroughbreds to increase size and refinement.
