The Brenton Horse is a hardy and hard working horse. In France, it is mainly bred for meat production, however, it remains on small farms and vineyards where it is used for a workhorse.

The Breton is a breed of draft horse. It developed in the Bretagne (Brittany) province in northwest France from native ancestral stock dating back thousands of years.

Breton
The Breton horse originated in France. It is used for heavy draft and farm work. It stands 15 to 16 h.h.

Originally from Brittany, France, the Breton horse has an interesting history. The breed originally developed from horses kept by Celtic warriors, and then remained largely unchanged until an infusion of oriental blood during the Crusades.

The Breton Horse is mainly bred for meat production in France today, however it remains on small farms and vineyards where it is used as a workhorse. It is used to gather seaweed as well and the Breton Horse is used in teams as a coach horse.

This breed has certainly developed over time. During the Middle Ages, there were two strains; the Sommier Breton and the Rossier. At the end of the 19th century, another development called the Draught Breton.

The Breton is a horse breed, which are very common as draft horses in France.


The horses brought to Canada were of Norman and Breton stock, generally from royal studs. The Breton gave to the Canadian extreme resilience and the Norman horses gave it a slightly oriental appearance.
