The body outline of the Breton is attractive, short and square, strong and deep. The hindquarters show great strength and the tail is most often docked.

This beautiful horse is compact with good active paces and gives a comfortable ride under saddle as well as being an extremely useful draught horse.

Breton Draft - Heavier with more bulk, compact and muscular.
Postier Breton - Similar in size to the draft, the Postier displays lovely gaits for such a large animal and has a more refined confirmation.

Originally from Brittany, France, the Breton horse has an interesting history. The breed originally developed from horses kept by Celtic warriors, and then remained largely unchanged until an infusion of oriental blood during the Crusades.

The Breton originated in the province of Bretagne (or Brittany) in the northwest of France. A demanding climate and land of rather poor quality characterizes this area.

This breed has certainly developed over time. During the Middle Ages, there were two strains; the Sommier Breton and the Rossier. At the end of the 19th century, another development called the Draught Breton.

The horses brought to Canada were of Norman and Breton stock, generally from royal studs. The Breton gave to the Canadian extreme resilience and the Norman horses gave it a slightly oriental appearance.
