Budyonnys were bred from Don horses, Chernomor horses and thouroughbreds around 1920. The founder of the breed, Marshal Semyon Budyonny, wanted to create a breed of cavalry horses that were enduring, fast and easy to keep and feed.

Budyonnys are very elegant warmblood horses with high withers, long legs and muscled neck and back. The head is noble, though often rather heavy and expressionate. In Russia, they're famous as showjumping horses.

The Budyonny is very adaptable, in the 1950′s an expiramental group of horses were set free on islands in Manych Lake in the Rostov district to see how well they would fare.

The BUDENNY horse (or Budyonny) was named after Marshall Budenny, who was one of the most famous Bolshevik cavalry commanders of the Russian Civil War (1918-20).
