History
In the Canadian Provinces, French mares were crossed with Dutch and English stock.

Canadian horses found a ready market in the United States and were also shipped in great quantities to the West Indies, a fact overlooked by enthusiasts of the paso-gaited horses.

The Canadian Horse or Le Cheval Canadien originated from horses sent to Quebec by King Louis XIV in the late 1600's.

Canadian Horse can be called a general utility animal. The mares are extraordinarily fertile and reproduce regularly until the age of 20 or older. Generally the Canadian Horse is black, but colors also range from bay to light chestnut.

The foundation to the breed of Standardbred horse was laid by Narrangansett Pacer and the Canadian Pacer, Norfolk Trotter, Morgan, Hackney and the Thouroughbreds. Bloodlines were selected by the breeders that would create the fastest horses.

A fusion of Thoroughbreds, Canadian Pacers, Saddlebreds, Morgans, American Standardbreds and Narragansett Pacers, this docile servant evolved in the middle Tennessee bluegrass region, and therefore christened the "Tennessee Walking Horse".

The Tennessee Walking Horse was developed from Thoroughbreds, Morgans, Standardbreds, Saddlebreds, canadian Packers and Narragansett Pacers owned by settlers in the 18th century.

Years later, the French Canadians brought their horses into what is now American territory. It was recorded that they bartered their horses in St. Louis with the Pawnee Indians, who then took them further west.

The first Haflingers were imported to the United States from Austria in 1958 by Tempel Smith of Tempel Farms in Illinois and the first Canadian Haflinger was registered in 1977.

However, the Cuban Trotter was also influenced by Canadian horses shipped to Cuba during the American Revolution. These horses were brought to Cuba to work on the sugar plantations.

The Narragansett Pacers and the Thoroughbreds are the biggest influences in this breed. The Morgan and the Canadian also gave their contributions to the improvement of the Saddlebred.

Since then, US and Canadian breeders have produced a new Shetland pony called the American Shetland. It has little resemblance to the original. The Shetland is hardy and able to thrive in the harshest environment. It is sound, robust, and long-lived.

The endurance of the Appaloosa horses took the Nez Perce within one day's ride of the Canadian border before Chief Joseph was forced to surrender.

Unfortunately, the breed was almost lost in the late 1870s when the United States government was taking over the Nez Perce's territory who attempted to escape over the Canadian border while defending their possessions.
