The Canter

The canter is described as being three-time, this is because each stride taken by the horse or pony has three beats.

 


The canter starts with a hind leg taking the first step. Then the diagonal pair, which is made up of the opposite hind leg and the diagonal fore, is the second step.

A canter is a "three beat" gait in which a foreleg and opposite hindleg strike the ground together, and the other two legs strike separately.

The canter is a forward movement performed in a diagonal manner to the right or to the left. On the right lead, the horse should start the gait in this order: left hind, right hind and left for together - then right fore.
