Cape Horse (Boer)
The history of the Cape horse (also known as the Boer horse) is as old as the history of the white civilization in Southern Africa.

The Cape Boerperd Horse is used for hard, demanding farm work, therefore it must be very hardy and have plenty of stamina. They need to be comfortable to ride, with enough speed at various gaits to make them pleasure horses for all who ride them.

The Cape Toi ranch was established in 1697 to raise horses for military & agricultural purposes. Late in the 19th century the ranch was nationalized and sold to a local union as a common ranch.

The Cape mountain zebra (Equus zebra zebra) is the smallest of the extant zebras -- with a shoulder height of about 120 centimeters (47 in.) -- and the most restricted geographically. Its broad black stripes are closely spaced on a pure white body.

Alliance with the Cape Colony
For strategic reasons and mainly for protection against Afrikaners, Basotho became allies with the British Cape Colony in 1843.

The modern herd of 88 animals now ranges on the cape of Toi. They average 12.2 to 13 hands (130 - 135 cm) in height.

The period from the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck until the Great Trek (1652 - 1836) The first horses were imported from Java during Van Riebeeck's reign in the Cape. The Dutch East Indian Company sold the first horses to the Free Burghers in 1665.

The first horses arrived in South Africa in 1653, when four horses were introduced to the Cape area by the Dutch East India Trading Company. The exact breed of these horses is unknown, but they may quite likely have been Arabian and Persian.

Developed in the Western Cape, Vlaamperde originated from a 19th century horse, the "Hantam Horse', which came into being though the use of English Thoroughbred and Arabian stallions on local Cape mares.

Wayne Lukas' best prospect this year is the royally-bred CAPE TOWN.

The Waler combined a variety of breeds; notably the Cape horse (from the Cape of Good Hope), English breeds, particularly the Thoroughbred, Arab), Timor Pony and perhaps a little Clydesdale or Percheron.

Already between 1750 and 1800 these horses in the Cape were renowned for their endurance and intelligence and were sought after as a military horse.

Parent stock included Thoroughbred, Cape of Good Hope horses (of mainly Spanish descent), Arab, Timor and Mountain pony. The strongest were retained for breeding and despite their mixed origins they developed into a strong and handsome type.

It is thought that they were Cape horses, or Barb horses imported from South Africa.

The first phase began in the Cape. In 1652 Jan van Riebeeck arrived and this pahses ends in 1836 when the Great Trek began. This phase begins when the horses were imported to the cape from Java.

The earliest forerunners of theWaler one stallion, three mares, a colt and two fillies of predominantlySpanish blood - were brought from the Cape of Good Hope with the FirstFleet of settlers in 1798.
