Andalusians were bred principally by Carthusian Monks in the late Middle Ages at monasteries in Jerez, Seville, and Cazallo. The monks were superb horse breeders and kept the blood of their horses quite pure.

In the 15th Century the Carthusian Monks founded the most famous lines of the Spanish horse on the Fuente del Suero estate Jerez.

It was as well that the Carthusian interest had been aroused, since Andalusians had a disastrous time at the Royal Stud during the reign of Philip III.

Andalusian horses owe a great deal to the Carthusian Monks who bred them, beginning in the late Middle Ages. In the late 1400's, studs were founded at monasteries in Terez, Seville, and Cazallo.

The horses that today are the most desirable, are those within the lines of the Spanish Horse known as "Carthusian Horses" also called Bocado or Terry horses.

When the Andalusian itself became a rare breed, it was preserved by the Carthusian monasteries in Jerez de la Frontera, Cordoba, and Seville.

During the 19 century it was the Carthusians who helped the Andalusian breed to survive by maintaining strict breeding programs and moving the horses out of the studs and into hiding in the monasteries, during times of trouble.
Uses ...

The classic Andalusian was preserved by the Carthusian Monks, whereas the Andalusian with an Arab-type head is a result of 19th-century efforts to crossbreed the Andalusian with the Arab breed.
