Chestnut horses, or "red" horses vary in shade from almost honey gold, to orangey red, to copper, chocolate and almost black. The color is due to various forms and densities of the red pigment phaeomelanin.
A chestnut can be any shade of red with no black points like the bay. They are very similar to a penny (from brand new to very old and tarnished). Chestnuts can be any of those colors.
CHESTNUT A chestnut horse has brown skin and the hairs are actually red. The shades vary from a light yellowy color to dark liver. The mane and tail are usually the same color as the body but can be lighter. The lighter coloring is called flaxen.

Otherwise known as the Schwarzwalder Fuchse, the Black Forest Chestnut is a small sized heavy draft horse native to the higher regions of the Black Forest in Germany.
An exclusively chestnut Hungarian Anglo-Arabian, the Gidran was developed at the Mezohegyes State Stud in 1816 with the import of the desert bred Arabian named Siglavy Gidran. He was believed to be of the Seglawi Jedran strain.
Their color is chestnut, ranging in shade from light golden to the dark liver. White markings occur, but in general are not as prominent as in other breeds, most of them being confined to a star or snip and white ankles or fetlocks.
