There are two theories of how the ponies came to live on Assateague Island. The legend is that a Spanish galleon wrecked off of Assateague Island and the surviving ponies swam to the island.

The Chincoteague pony is a hardy breed between the size of a horse and a pony. It exists on the island of Assateague, hence it is also known (although not as commonly) as the Assateague pony. It may be any color, although pinto is the most common.

CHINCOTEAGUE PONY
Descending from the Assateague Island wild horses, the Chincoteague Pony stands on average between twelve and thirteen hands. This is attributed likely from the harsh environments they endure and their poor diets.
The tale of the Chincoteague pony is of the horses swimming to Assateague Island from a shipwrecked Spanish galleon.
The Chincoteague pony breed does not have a complicated history. Even so, these ponies are highly valued by both dedicated horse owners and the residents of Virginia as if they were truly ancient in origin.
These intelligent animals can oft become stubborn, which is why they require proper training. The different breeds under this type are Shetland pony, Welsh pony, Connemara pony, Chincoteague pony, Dartmoor pony, Fell pony.
