Cob is a type rather than a specific breed, in the UK it is often used to descrive a common riding horse and in the US it is generally used to describe the Welsh Cob.

This horse has been bred in Wales for centuries. It's ancestor was the Andalusians living on the Welsh borders in the 11th century.

This lovely looking horse is a fine example of a light draught horse, it has an even temperament and a strong slightly stocky conformation.

The Welsh Cob (Section D) is the largest of the Welsh horse breeds, not less than 13.2 Hands high, with no upper limit in the breed rules.

The Cob was used for pack and riding in both world wars. It was crossed with the thoroughbred to produce good hunters, played its part in the development of the Hackney and even of the Fell pony, ...

An Irish Cob is ample boned and well-muscled, they are both compact and powerful with possession of a wide range of abilities in different disciplines. They have an imposing appearance with a stocky, explosive body carried proudly.

The Welsh Cob is the largest-sized animal within the Welsh Pony and Cob breed registries. Used originally as a farm animal in Wales during the Middle Ages, the quick and friendly Welsh Cob is generally utilized today as a show horse.

The Welsh Cob is an ancient breed descended from Wales. They are the largest and strongest of Welsh breeds (Section D in the Welsh Stud Book). They are courageous, good jumpers, good swimmers and able to carry a substantial weight on their back.

The Welsh Cob is beyond doubt the most versatile of animals in existence and long ago established a reputation as the best ride and drive animal in the world.

Introduction.
As the name implies, Welsh Ponies and Cobs originated in the rugged hills and valleys of Wales, in the western portion of Great Britain.

The Welsh Pony and Cob Society was founded in Wales in 1901 and their first studbook was published in 1902. The original classification for Welsh ponies was Section A, the Welsh Mountain Pony.

The Welsh Section D Pony, or Welsh Cob as it is also known, became well established as a breed by the fifteenth century and was used mainly for farm work and as a means of transport, both ridden and in harness.

Over the years, evidence has been found indicating that native breeds in Wales have existed prior to 1600 BC. Even Julius Caesar, upon his traveling to Britain in 55 BC, was enthralled by the Britons and their exquisite chariot horses.

Gypsy Cob - This small draft horse traces its roots to the Romanys, who had no need for the larger drafts.

- Section D: Welsh Cob is the tallest of the Welsh ponies with height of over 13.2 hands. Although it is more cob-like, Welsh Cob has some pony-like features such as its head.

At age 11 I got my first bay cob called Ches, a quiet horse who taught me to ride. Later came a chestnut Anglo-Arab called Little John. He was anything but quiet, but taught me a great deal about horse behaviour and training.

The idea of the Gypsy Vanner/Cob being "bred for centuries" is not completely accurate. For as long as Gypsies have been around, they have bred whatever type of horse that best suits their needs.

The breed of horse known as gypsy vanner horses (aka Tinker horse, Irish Cob, Piebald) were originally bred to pull gypsy caravans throughout the United Kingdom.

When a child outgrows his Shetland Pony, he will probably move up to a Welsh or Connemara Pony. While several types of Welsh Ponies are fairly small, the Cob type is large enough to easily carry teens and adults.

The Claybank Dun is a really light shade of the red dun. It has similar patterns to the dun which include a dorsal stripe, dorsal bars, and maybe even concentric rings on the forehead (sometimes call cob webbing).

While Figure’s parentage is unknown, it is probable that he was either a thoroughbred or of mixed Arabian and Dutch heritage, or a combination of Welsh Cob.

Figure was later used for plowing and pulling timber and won many pulling contests with him. The origins of Figure are uncertain but it is believed Welsh Cob, Thoroughbred, Arabian and Barb were all present in his background.
