Some believe that the Connemara is from the Scandinavian ponies that the Vikings first brought to Ireland. Legend, however, says that galleons from the Spanish Armada ran aground in 1588, and the Andalusians on board were set loose.

Legend has it that the Connemara Pony descended from Spanish horses, rescued from the Armada when the ships wrecked on the rocky coast of western Ireland in 1568.

Connemara Ponies have existed in Western Ireland for many years although the exact origins of the ponies is unclear.

The Connemara is an ancient breed, probably of the same basic family as the Western Isles type of Highland pony.

The Connemara Pony originates in the Connemara region of western Ireland, a place not known for its hospitable landscape. Because of the harsh conditions, these ponies have become an incredibly hardy and tough breed.

Connemara lies in an area of western Ireland known for its harsh mountainous terrain, endless desolate moors and bogs and rocky barren shores pounded by the tides and the storms of the Atlantic.

The Connemara is an old breed native to the Connaught region of Ireland, and is a descendant of the Celtic pony, which is one of the early primitive breeds of Europe.

The Connemara "Stands on short legs, covering a lot of ground". The cannon bone is short, dense, flat and clean, measuring 7 to 9 inches below the knee. The body is deep and compact, well-balanced with depth, substance and good heart room.

The Connemara's development was primarily driven by its native terrain and natural selection.

The silver gene occurs in several breeds, including Connemaras, Saddlebreds and Mustangs.

When a child outgrows his Shetland Pony, he will probably move up to a Welsh or Connemara Pony. While several types of Welsh Ponies are fairly small, the Cob type is large enough to easily carry teens and adults.

Some breeds, such as the Hackney pony, are primarily used for driving, while other breeds, such as the Connemara pony and Australian Pony, are used primarily for riding. Others, such as the Welsh pony, are used for both riding and driving.

The Irish Cob is a hybrid breed, resulting from an 18th-century crossbreeding process that involved the English Thoroughbred, Connemara, and Irish Draft horses.

In Britain the Spanish horse has had a strong influence on many of our breeds including the Connemara, Cleveland Bay, Hackney, Irish Draught, the Welsh breeds.

Early settlers brought from the British Isles Exmoor, Dartmoor, New Forest, Galloway, Welsh, Connemara and the odd Highlands ponies. These ponies, for nearly three centuries, interbred until one common pony developed "The Newfoundland Pony".

Some pony breeds are used for the purpose of riding, for instance the Hackney pony and some used for the purpose of driving such as the Connemara pony. Welsh pony is used for both riding and driving.

The breed's influence is truly international; it also played a founding role in the development of the Irish Connemara, most German warmblood breeds, the Cleveland Bay of England, and the Peruvian Paso of the new world.

There are numerous varieties, including the Welsh, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Connemara, New Forest, Highland, Dale, Fell, pony of the Americas, Shetland (under seven hands high), Iceland (see photograph), and Norwegian.
