Connemara Ponies have existed in Western Ireland for many years although the exact origins of the ponies is unclear.

Connemara ponies make an excellent investment as they live a long life and despite of their lively nature, they are very trainable. A pure Connemara should always have good heart room, a quality often lacking with half-breds.

Uses
Connemara ponies are excellent all round riding, competition and driving ponies, they are known for being excellent, bold jumpers and have good free moving paces in the dressage field.

Over the years, Connemara Ponies have made their way to the various countries of Europe, to Australia and New Zealand, and of course to the United States.

In the mid 1960s the APSB opened sections for Welsh Mountain and Connemara ponies and catered for some other European breeds later.
Uses
Today, the pony is mainly used as a children's mount and for smaller adult riders.

Regardless of their origins, the Connemara ponies thrived in the area, later Arabian, Hackney & Thoroughbred blood was added.

These ancestors were primarily, Exmoor, Dartmoor and New Forest ponies and to a lesser extent, Welsh Mountain, Galloway (extinct), Highland and Connemara ponies.

The Connemara ponies originate here,but todaythey are also bred on the European Continent,in the USA, Canada, Australia and South Africa.

Arab blood has been introduced, and latterly Arabs and small Thoroughbreds have been bred to Connemara mares and the offspring registered as Connemara; so that the breed has changed quite considerably and it is questionable how many Connemara ponies ...
