The Danish warmblood is a modern day sporting horse developed from a base stock of horses first developed in Denmark sometime around the 14th century.

Although Denmark has a long history of horse breeding that dates back to the 14th century, only fairly recently have they come to the forefront of the international market for breeding first-class competition horses.

The Danish Warmblood was founded on Frederiksborg stock, crossed with the Thoroughbred. The resultant local mares were bred to Anglo Norman {virtually Selle Francais} stallions, Thoroughbreds, and Trakehners.

One of the more recent of the selectively bred European competition horses is the Danish Warmblood, whose stud-book was not opened until the 1960s.

Originating in Denmark, the Danish Warmblood was bred to be a superb competition horse. The Frederiksborg and Thoroughbred were the main base for this versatile breed, but a few others were added for refining purposes.

The Danish Warmblood is the modern sporthorse breed of Denmark. Initially established in the mid-20th century, the breed was developed by crossing native Danish mares with elite stallions from established European bloodlines.

The Sport Horse type has been bred to excel in dressage, eventing and show jumping and has been developed by crossing the Knabstrupper with the warmblood sport horses of Europe, most notably the Danish Warmblood and the Trakehner.

Influential stallions include Abglanz for the Hanoverian, Herbstrurm who influenced the Oldenburg, Marco Polo for the Dutch Warmblood, the stallions Ibicus and Donauwind for the Danish Warmblood, and Polarstern for the Swedish Warmblood.
