The 1920s were an important time for Dartmoors. A breed society was formed in 1924 with a council and a paid secretary. The height limit was finally fixed at 12.2 hands.
Dartmoor Pony
The Dartmoor Pony is one of nine breeds native to the British Isles. The area from which it originates is a rocky, barren, moorland called Dartmoor in Devon, England.
Dartmoor Ponies have roamed the moor for many centuries. One of the earliest recorded references to these ponies is in the will of a Saxon Bishop, Awlfwold of Crediton, who died in 1012.
Dartmoor ponies stand an average of twelve hands (48") at the withers. They are dark in color, mostly bay, brown or black with an occasional gray or chestnut. White markings, if any, are very small.
Dartmoor is about 365 square miles of almost solid granite highlands. A thin layer of soil covers protruding rocks throughout with little fields, grassy slopes and wooded valleys along the edges.
Dartmoor ponies are in high demand as children's ponies and as show ponies. They have excellent dispositions, are sweet-tempered, willing, and naturally athletic.
The Dartmoor has been influenced by many breeds over the centuries and was once used by miners to carry tin down from the moors. It is hardy and surefooted, and its build and temperament make it an ideal child's first pony.
