The Dartmoor Pony has a small head, strong neck, strong back and highquarters. Hardy, strong, versatile, a good jumper and long lived. Good stamina.
Temperament of the Dartmoor Pony
The Dartmoor Pony is reliable, sensible, kind and quiet.

The Dartmoor Pony has a small, well-defined body type -- muscular but not overly chunky. Both its head and ears are rather small; the pony's neck, meanwhile, is of average length.

The Dartmoor Pony Moorland Scheme (DPMS), established in 1988 in a bid to halt the decline in numbers and along with the Dartmoor Pony Society, runs a breeding scheme. The Dartmoor Pony has since been granted Rare Breed status.

The earliest reference to the Dartmoor Pony appeared in 1012 in the Will of a Saxon Bishop, Aelfwold of Crediton. Much later during the heyday of tin mines on Dartmoor, the ponies were used extensively for carrying the tin to the Stannary towns.

The Dartmoor pony is a quality riding pony and also suitable for use in harness. They are nicely proportioned and put together, with good conformation. They have fine, attractive heads set on a muscular neck.

If all this may sound over-particular, it is the result of a peculiar problemwhich has confronted breeders of the Dartmoor pony in its natural habitat.

These intelligent animals can oft become stubborn, which is why they require proper training. The different breeds under this type are Shetland pony, Welsh pony, Connemara pony, Chincoteague pony, Dartmoor pony, Fell pony.
