In the 1950s, the Dutch Warmblood came about by crossing the Gelderlanders with the Groningen, and then refining the horse with Thoroughbred. The Gelderlanders gave the new breed its excellent forequarters.

In an attempt to revive the breed and prevent it from being assimilated into the Dutch Warmblood stud book, the official Groninger Horse Association, or 'Het Groninger Paard' was founded in 1982.

The reason was that a majority of animals were wrapped up into the Dutch Warmblood breed. Only a single purebred stallion remained at that time. To reduce the inbreeding, Oldenburg blood has been used during the reinstallation of the breed.
