Horse-breeding in Switzerland can be traced back for nearly 1,000 years to the Benedictine monastery of Einsiedeln where horses were being bred is early as AD 964.

 


Because of its versatility, the Einsiedler is in popular demand with theSwiss cavalry, as is its close relation the Anglo-Norman (the Einsiedler issometimes known as the Swiss Anglo-Norman).

The Einsiedler of Switzerland forms the basis of the excellent Swiss performance horse breeds and types. It is a strong, active horse with good movement and incredible physical strength.

The Swiss Warmblood horse breed, also called the Einsiedler, was founded in the 10th century on the local Schwyer stock. It was first bred at the Benedictine Monastery of Einsiedeln. They are now raised at the Federal Stud at Avenches.
