The English Thoroughbred's physical characteristics can be directly attributed to its ancestors. Bred for speed, its withers are prominent and its back is long; the loins are well attached to the croup, which can be sloping.

English Thoroughbred has recently been added to help the quality of the horse. The breed is tough and hardy, possesses great stamina, and is willing, calm, and bold, making them excellent riding horses.

The English Thoroughbred, Russian Don and Chernomor Horses were crossbred to begin creating the Budenny breed of horses, which became renowned for its agility, bravery and intelligence.

The English thoroughbred counts besides the Arabian Darley Arabian (1713) and the noble Barb Godolphin Barb (1731) also the Turkmenian Byerly Turk (1689) as their ancestors (the names alone point to their origin).

In 1780 an English Thoroughbred of the Darley Arabian blood line was born called "Messenger" who was bred to race at a gallop. Messenger was the great grandfather of the famous race horse "Hambletonian".

The history of the English Thoroughbred is a long one. Records indicate that a stock of Arab and Barb horses was introduced into England as early as the 3rd century.

Because of breeding with the English Thoroughbred, the Novokirghiz has become faster and more refined than the Old Kirghiz.

Developed in the Western Cape, Vlaamperde originated from a 19th century horse, the "Hantam Horse', which came into being though the use of English Thoroughbred and Arabian stallions on local Cape mares.

Mares of this heavy warmblood breed crossed with the English Thoroughbred, Anglo-Arabian and Trakehner stallions gave the today's modern Bavarian Warmblood that was registered as a separate breed in 1963.
