The Estonian Draft was developed through a selective crossing process. Specifically, Estonian native mares were mated with the larger Ardennes horses from Sweden -- this is the reason why it is also called the Eston-Arden horse.
Also called the Estonian Arden, the Estonian Draft was created with the goal of developing a tough work horse who was easy to keep, even tempered and quick to move. This developing breed was established to meet a growing need for larger horses.

It played an important role in the formation of the Obva (now extinct) and Vyatka breeds. The breed has also been used with the Hackney in the formation of the Tori breed and with Ardennes in forming the Estonian Draft.
