Exmoors are the oldest of the British native breeds, and since ponies are not indigenous to Britain it must be assumed that it walked there before the country became an island.

Exmoor was once a Royal Forest and hunting ground, and was sold off in 1818. Sir Richard Acland, the last warden of Exmoor, took thirty ponies and established the famous Anchor herd, which still exists to this day.

Exmoor ponies blend in very well against the background of mixed heather, grass and bracken in their moorland habitat.

The Exmoor pony has inhabited the Exmoor moorland of South-West Britain for many years. 104 Exmoor brood mares were recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1085 and by 1700 local farmers were allowed to graze their ponies on the Forest.

The Exmoor pony is the oldest and purist of the British native pony breeds. The ponies have roamed the bleak, open moors of southwestern England, known as Exmoor, for centuries.

EXMOOR PONY CHARACTERISTICS Breed Standard and Purpose of Features
EARS "Ears short, thick and pointed". The ears are small and lined with soft hair.

Exmoor is situated in the southwest of Britain, spanning the borders of Devon and Somerset, its northern boundary being the high cliffs of the Bristol Channel. It is an area of high moorland divided by steep wooded valleys and fragmented by farmland.

Found mainly in Exmoor, in the southwest of Devon, the Exmoor pony is living a semi-wild existence.

The Exmoor National Park Authority, great supporters of the breed, have established two herds on Exmoor in the interests of conservation and to ensure that the Exmoor Pony remains in its natural environment for the visitor to enjoy.

In the beginning there were British hill ponies and woolly mammoths and you could walk to Calais. During the past 130,000 years of progress, we have lost all of that.

EXMOOR PONY
In southwestern England, the Exmoor Pony are descendants of horses that walked along the land of Britain before it was an island. The oldest native pony breed, the Exmoor pony is evidenced to exist over 60,000 years.

The Exmoor Pony is a very old and primitive breed. People tried to introduce other breeds into the bloodline and only succeeded in producing a pony that could not survive the harsh winter.

An English pony breed originating in Exmoor, Somerset and Devon, the Exmoor ponies are characterized by their wide "toad" eyes. Usually around 12 hands tall with a dark bay, brown or dun coat with a light muzzle.

As the name implies, these ponies come from the Exmoor region, a wild moorland in the South West of England. The Exmoor is the oldest British pony, and possibly as old as any horse breed.

Nevertheless there are some ancient horse breeds, like the Exmoor, German Dülmener, Sorraia and Caspian that might have directly descended from ancient wild horses, a controversial issue which isn't resolved.

Native breeds range from the statuesque Suffolk Punch and magnificent Shire, right down to the Dartmoor, Exmoor and New Forest ponies.

The horses brought to Iceland during this period were probably Norwegian Dole Horses and Celtic Ponies (the ancestor of the British Exmoor and Shetland).

There are numerous varieties, including the Welsh, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Connemara, New Forest, Highland, Dale, Fell, pony of the Americas, Shetland (under seven hands high), Iceland (see photograph), and Norwegian.
