Fell pony
The Fell Pony is a versatile, working breed of mountain and moorland pony which originates from the North of England. This large pony averages 13-2 hands (1.37 m), with the upper height limit at 14 hands (1.42 m).

The Fell Pony is a close relative of the Dales Pony and is very similar in looks. However, around 100 years ago Clydesdale blood was introduced to the Dales giving them roughly 4 inches in height and a draftier appearance than the Fells.

The Fell Pony has been recognisable as a breed since Roman times when they were employed as draught animals in the north of England within local industry and the building of the Roman walls.

The Fell pony is renowned for its strength - when used for carting lead , on the western side of the Pennines, it was reputedly carried daily loads of 220 lb for up to 30 miles.

The Fell pony, mainly found in the northern and western sides of the Pennines and in Cumbria, is very similar in many ways to the Dales pony, which is its geographical neighbor.

The well-known English writer on horses, Anthony Dent, and others are of the opinion that the Friesian horse influenced the Old English Black Horse and the Fell Pony.

Dole horse breed resembles Fell Pony and the English Dales Pony and it is possible that both of these breeds share the similar origins.

The Mérens resembles another ancient breed, the Fell pony and to the larger Friesian horse. This breed is rare.
