National Show in 1996, and after reviewing pedigrees for over a year the qualifying criteria was raised to 80%. This criteria has proven to be excellent, as demonstrated by the overall quality and consistency of National Foundation Quarter Horses.

 


Nevertheless, some descendants of some of the foundation quarter horses (such as Old Fred), did (and do) have more extensive markings. In all other ways these horses probably were - or are - little different from their parents and other relatives.

There are two distinct types of Quarter Horses -- the old-fashioned "bulldog" type (the Foundation Quarter Horses) and the "racing Quarter", which looks more like a well-muscled Thoroughbred. They range in size from 14 to 16 hands.

These are called Foundation Quarter Horses, like Yo Chance. The other line has in recent years had infusions of Thoroughbred blood.

Because sabino, frame, and splashed white genes can be mimnimally expressed, the gene can be passed on through horses that adhere to the "White Line Rule" of the AQHA and still carry pinto genes. Many foundation quarter horses, ...
