- Franches-Montagnes -
The Franches-Montagnes (also known as the Freiberger) was developed around the end of the 19th century in the Jura region of Switzerland by crossing native Jura mares with Thoroughbred and Anglo-Norman stallions.

Several different mutations within a specific gene appear to be responsible for the development of dominant white colouring in several modern horse populations, researchers have revealed.

The Freiberger (or Franches-Montagnes) is a mountain-bred horse, originating in the hilly Jura region of western Switzerland. He is an active mover, naturally sure-footed, quiet, and good-natured.

Haase et al (2007) sequenced the KIT gene in white and non-white Franches-Montagnes Horses. They found a mutation that inactivates the KIT gene product and leads to a lack of melanocytes in the skin of white horses.

The Freiberger is based on the old Freiberger cold-blood, also called the Franches-Montagnes.

They are also known as the Franches-Montagnes.
History
The breed developed by crossing the native Bernese Jura horse with the English Thoroughbred type and Anglo-Norman, and also with the Ardennais and the Arabian Horse.

One of the most common horse breeds in Switzerland is the Freiberg. Typically, it is used for riding and pulling light carts. The Freiberg is also known as the Freiberger, the Franches-Montagnes and Jura.
