French Trotter is an attractive horse and has great speed, power and endurance. It is also known as the Demi-Sang Trotter and Norman Trotter. The horse derives the name 'Norman Trotter' from the place of its origin-Normandy, France.

French Trotter - Norman Trotter
Trotting or harness harness racing are now well established throughout the US, Europe, Australia and the countries of the former USSR, though nowhere is it so deeply entrenched as it is in France.

The French Trotter is a gentle and calm horse. It is very submissive and easy to train. It is most commonly used for breeding. Male trotters are used to mate with purebreds and are also fit for racing.

Horses in France first began to be selectively bred for trotting races in the early to mid-1800s.

The French Trotter background came from Normandy Breeders importing English Thoroughbreds as well as using Norfolk Roadsters to produce lighter, more active horses.

French Trotters have undergone selection in their breeding program since the mid-19th century, a result of crossing more Normandy mares with Thoroughbreds and particularly Norfolk trotters from England.

Orlovs rained supreme on the track till the end of the 19th century, when Standardbreds and later French trotters made their appearance. There was a crisis. Many breeders began to bring Orlov mares to Standardbred stallions.

Judicious introduction of the French AngloArab and French Trotter has added brilliance, agility and energy to the breed. The North American Selle Francais Horse Association, Inc.

The Anglo-Norman breed has refined head, reminding of the French Trotter, set on long elegant neck, sloping shoulders and strong body with excellent bones. Eyes are wide set and they have long ears. Average height is between 15.2-16.3 hands.

Anglo-Arabians, Selle Français (or French Riding Horse), and French Trotters plus all other crossbreds can be qualified as AQPS. For racing purposes, each breed has its own studbook.

The breed was created by the French by crossing sturdy native horses with Thoroughbred stallions. French AngloArab and the French Trotter horse breeds were introduced into the breeding for intelligence, energy and agility.

Hambletonian is considered the founding sire of the Standardbred breed. The Standardbred stud book was officially formed in 1939 and this breed has influenced such breeds as the French Trotter and Russian Orlov.
