Friesian horse
The Friesian horse is a breed of horse from Friesland, a province of the Netherlands. Although originally bred as a draft horse, the breed is graceful and nimble for its size and later developed into a finer-boned nobleman's steed.

The Friesian Horse holds it head high and proud with an arching neck. The animated gait is natural. Selective breeding is used to achieve the active hock action and high, extended from leg action. The body is strong and deep with a sloping shoulder.

The Friesian horse is one of the oldest European breeds native to the Netherlands. It has been used for riding, agricultural work and as a calvary horse.

The Friesian horse has a distinct personality and temperament. Gentle and serene, it is commonly used to pull light farm carts or carriages.

The original "old" East Friesian breed is extinct. That was a heavy warmblood, nearly a draft horse but with warmblood gaits and character: used as carriage and farming horse.

Friesian Horses are always black. White markings are not allowed on the body or legs. They have a long, thick, flowing mane and tail and pronounced fetlock hair.

Friesians have been bred for many centuries in Holland. They are descended from the Andalusian, the Barb, and European draft breeds.

The Friesian is a medium- heavy breed (Stallions 158cm minimum -166cm, Mares 155cm minimum -164cm) with an average weight of approximately 550kgs for Mares and 650kgs for Stallions.

The modern Friesian descends from one of Europe's oldest breeds of warmbloods. Yet as little as one hundred years ago, it was nearly extinct.

Alt-Oldenburg/East Friesian, Silesian, East-German, and Holsteiner horses of the appropriate type were used to re-establish the Groningen, as well as one Cleveland Bay stallion. Today there are 25 approved stallions and over 400 mares.
