Instead of a trot, the Peruvian Paso performs a ambling four beat gait between the walk and the canter. It is a lateral gait, in that it has four equal beats and is performed laterally - left hind, left fore, right hind, right fore.

Gait is the repetitive limb coordination pattern used in locomotion.
Asymmetrical gait - gait in which the limb movements on one side are not exactly repeated on the other side. Example: Canter, Gallop.

Gait : the way a horse can move its feet to travel.
Gaited Horse : a horse that can travel in special ways that other horses cannot.
Gallop : the fastest movement of a horse.

The gait supplies essentially none of the vertical bounce that is characteristic of the trot, and hence posting (moving up and down with each of the horse's footfalls) is unnecessary.

The gait of the Paso Fino Horses is unique and for those of us with bad backs, bad knees, and many other problems caused by years of riding, the Paso is the ideal choice. The movement actually eases stiffness in joints and promotes good circulation.

The gait of the Paso Fino horse is totally natural and normally exhibited from birth.

The gait of a Peruvian horse can be as slow as a walk or as fast as an extended trot or slow canter. Both the gait and the flashy leg action are completely natural. They are not induced or aided in any way by artificial training or devices.

The gait itself is evenly spaced, with each foot contacting the ground independently.

COMMENTARY ...

Their gait is smooth and relatively action-free, showing only a slight front-to-back motion. It is basically a low, moderate rack, in that it is four beats, square, smooth, and has not extravagant knee or hock action.

The ideal gait is a near evenly timed 4 beat intermediate gait which gives an exceptionally smooth ride at speeds from 5 to over 20 miles per hour. Many of these horses are also able to perform other smooth riding gaits as well.

The third gait is the canter, which is a collected gallop. The canter is performed in much the same way as other breeds, but the walking horse seems to have a more relaxed way of performing this gait.

The ambling gait that they possess makes them animals with a very smooth ride that is comfortable for the rider and because of that they became very popular in England and France, known as ladies mounts and later as hobby horses.

CHARACTERISTIC GAIT
The Tennessee Walking Horse has three gaits: the flat walk, the running walk, which is the predominant feature, and the rolling, "rocking-chair" canter, a smooth, collected movement in which the head nods in a distinctive fashion.

Pace is the fifth gait and is not found in all Icelandic horses. A good Icelandic five-gaiter will show short bursts of flying pace under saddle, covering 100m in under 8 seconds, or 250m in under 20 seconds - nearly 30mph.

canter -- the gait between walk and gallop; it consists of three beats followed by a moment of suspension, and has "leads" (in which legs on one side of the horse, front and back, reach farther forward than the legs on the other side).

RACK: A four beat gait, each foot striking the ground separately, neither a pace or trot.
FLAT WALK: A true square four-beat walk with cadenced head motion and good form.

Lateral gait - legs on the same side move at the same time. Approximately 80% of harness racers use this gait. The lateral pacing gait is ideal for harness racing.

The most important gait of fox trotting horses is the Fox Trot. Within the fox trot many traits need to be considered: rhythm, back end, front end, and animation.

CANTER: A threebeat gait; a slow, collected gallop, natural to the American Saddlebred. In western classes it is known as a lope.

As the destrier's natural gait was the trot, the Welsh Cobs had to cover great distances matching the warhorse stride-for-stride at the trot. To this day the forceful and ground covering trot of the Welsh Cob is legendary.

In addition to the walk, trot, and canter, they can also learn the slow gait and the rack. They can be found in dressage competitions, western riding, jumping, and fine harness competitions in the United States and in Canada.
