Gaits: The Tennessee Walking Horse performs the flat foot walk, running walk, and canter. These three are the gaits for which the Tennessee Walking Horse is famous, with the running walk being an inherited natural gait unique to this breed.

All horses move naturally with four basic gaits: the four-beat walk, the two-beat trot or jog, and the leaping gaits known as the canter or lope (a three-beat gait), and the gallop.

The Gaits
The Mangalarga Marchador has two special gaits or marchas, the marcha picada and the marcha batida. Which gait is superior is always subject to debate and it seems to boil down to the personal preference of the individual breeder.

The five gaits of the American Saddle Horse are the walk, trot, canter, slow gait and rack.
The basic gaits of the Paso Fino in order of speed are the paso fino, paso corto, and paso largo. They also walk and canter. These are not trained movements, but are natural to the horse from the moment of its birth.
The other gaits are the four-time walk, performed with the hind feet distinctly overstriding the front track, and the canter, which is between the low, fast, long-rein lope of the cow pony and the high, slow gait of the Tennessee Walker or Saddlebred.

The Four Major Gaits
There are four major gaits, and these comprise of the walk, trot, canter and gallop. The type of gait depends on how many beats there are in each gait.

Western Pleasure events require horses to complete all Western gaits including the walk, the jog and the lope at a set standard. Reining events involve completing specific patterns containing circles, at different speeds and directions.
