It is thought to have developed partly from the Garrano pony of Portugal. The ponies are hardy and rugged. They have a size between a pony and a normal horse, and have a short body and strong legs.

The ancestry of the Galician pony is similar to that of many pony breeds who live on the Atlantic coast from Scotland down to Portugal. In each different place the animals evolved to suit the specific geographical & climate conditions.

The pony developed in Mexico from horses imported to South America, mostly thought to be Garrano and the Galician pony of Spain, by Hernando Cortes. It is highly prized in Mexico, being tough with strong powers of endurance, and sound.

It is generally believed that the Garrano is one of the ancestors to the Andalusian and the Galician Pony. Recently, the breed has had infusions of Arabian blood, implemented by the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture.

The ponies are believed to have developed from the Galician pony from Spain and the Garrano pony from Portugal, also owing a debt to the Spanish Sorraia.
