The gallop is described as being four-time, this is because each stride taken by the horse or pony has four beats.

gallop -- the fastest gait; it consists of four beats followed by a moment of suspension.
garters -- leather straps that buckle under the knee to keep jodhpur pants from riding up.
gelding -- a castrated male horse.

Galloping down a cross-country course, leaping three-foot fences or sliding to a stop puts an enormous amount of stress on fine, delicately built equine legs. But there is a lot going on behind the scenes.

In gallopers especially, the damage to and the resulting 'ageing' of tendons begins at a very young age and as soon as they are put under racing workloads.

The gallop or canter is a three-beat gait, ridden at various speeds. A slow gallop is comfortable for riding and is common all over the world with the different breeds.

The gallop is the most natural gait for the Thoroughbred and the breed canters in a gallop called running.

The gallop is another "four beat" gait which follows a similar progression to the canter, except the two paired legs land separately, the hind leg landing slightly before the foreleg.

The Trote en Gallope, Trote y Galope horse is only about 60 years old and comes from Colombia. They are the result of crossing the Andalusian with the Colombian Criollo or Colombian Paso Fino. The resulting animal is both handsome and graceful.

In some breed competitions, a judge may ask for a hand gallop, and (rarely) an extended trot.

The Thoroughbred is bred primarily for racing under saddle at the gallop.

In 1780 an English Thoroughbred of the Darley Arabian blood line was born called "Messenger" who was bred to race at a gallop. Messenger was the great grandfather of the famous race horse "Hambletonian".

Standardbreds are a breed of horse best known for their ability to race in harness at a trot or pace instead of under saddle at a gallop. Developed in North America, the breed is now recognized worldwide for its harness racing ability.

The gait of the Barb horse is not very good, but the horse can gallop well. This has had an influence of racing breeds such as the Standard bred, American Quarter Horse and thoroughbred.

The Standardbred horses use their ability to race in harness at a trot or pace instead of under saddle at a gallop. The Quarter Horse is involved in short distance sprinting while the Arabian is involved in endurance racing.

They are the "flat-foot walk" which is a slow, bold, and even gait; and the "canter" which is a refined gallop with a slow and high rolling motion. The canter is full of spring, rhythm and grace, and is often referred to as the "rocking chair gait.
