Gelderlander Horse
The Dutch Province of Gelderland has a tradition of excellence in horse breeding. The province gives name to an excellent breed of horse which has evolved over the last century.

 


THE GELDERLANDER
A century ago the breeders of the Gelder province began to develop the Gelderlander, using the dull, common native mares as a base.

Gelderlanders are often used as pleasure, driving and competition horse.

The Gelderlander was originally bred in the Gelderland region of the Netherlands. Although geographically close to Groningen, the soil in Gelderland is much sandier and does not require a horse with the same power as the Groningen horse.

Also called the Gelderlander, the Gelderland comes from the Gelderland province in Holland, however they have not been officially bred since the late 1960′s & their lineage was absorbed into the Dutch Warmblood.

In the 1950s, the Dutch Warmblood came about by crossing the Gelderlanders with the Groningen, and then refining the horse with Thoroughbred. The Gelderlanders gave the new breed its excellent forequarters.

With the merging of the local studbooks into one organization, some breeders decided not to follow the modern trend and continued to breed the traditional farm type of light draft horse -- the Gelderlander.

The Groningen Horse resembles Gelderlander breed, but it is heavier and larger. The Groningen has a long and powerful body with a deep girth. The hindquarters are strong and muscular and the joints are enunciated and rounded.

Up until World War II, the Dutch Warmblood was divided into two types: the Gelderlanders bred in the south and the Groningen bred in the north.

The Gelderland , or Gelderlander, is a warmblood breed of horse that was developed in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands.

There are three categories of Dutch horses: the Sport Horse, the Harness Horse and the versatile Gelderlander horse. Each is best in it's specific category, but, in general, this breed is known for its athleticism, intelligence and eagerness.

This horse looks like Gelderlander horse breed but it is heavier and superior. The Groningen Horse breed is fashioned by human hands.
