One of the oldest breeds of equids in Europe is the Gotland Pony. Known also as the Russ or Skogsruss, this pony has lived on the island of Gotland off the Swedish coast since the Ice Age.
The Gotland Pony horses have lived in the forest regions of the island of Gotland from time immemorial. Their history is mysterious and fascinating.
The Gotland pony is a light weight pony with a narrow built, small, straight head and small ears. The neck is short and well-built. Shoulders are strong and the back is rather long. Its tail is set low on sloping quarters.
In the 18th Century, many references of the Gotland pony are found. By the 19th century, the ponies were found throughout Gotland on large forest and within the center of the island. Farmers were using Gotland Ponies as draft horses on their farms.
