The first Hackney ponies were known as Wilson ponies, and it was not until later that they became known as the Hackney Pony.

Along with the Hackney Horse, there are four types of Hackney ponies. The Hackney Pony is smaller with distinct pony traits and evolved in the span of a few years in the 1870's in England.

The "new breed" is essentially a smart harness pony, and was created by selecting the finer types of Island Shetland and then crossing them with Hackney Ponies.

There are classes tbr all the Native Breeds, Ridden and In-Hand, Riding Ponies, Hunter Ponies, Hackney Ponies, Hacks, Children's Ridden Ponies, Dressage and Driving. The Show affiliates to the British Show Pony Society.

In the United States, Hackney ponies have also had considerable influence on the American version of the Shetland pony.

The shoulders are broad, while the legs are lean with durable joints and dense hooves. Most Hackney ponies have a bay-colored coat, though some are seen in shades of brown, gray, and black.

Most Hackney ponies today have his bloodlines in their pedigree. In 1883 the English Hackney Horse Society was created to preserve and develop the integrity of the Hackney lines. The first annual show was held by the society in 1885 in London.
