The Hessen is a very popular German horse breed, evident in its frequent use in equestrian competitions. Taking care of the regal Hessen, however, can be a challenge.

Breeding of the Hessen Horse began officially in 1724 when the Berber-beck stud was promoted to court stud status. Many different strains were bred by different court stud until 1956 when many of them were exported to the Dillenburg stud farm.

The Hessen horse breeding began at the courts of Hessen's dukes and princes, during the 15th century.
Hessian warmblood, located in the state of Hessen. Reliable sources for local breeds in Hessen do not exist. There was no state breeding based on the local farmers in the former centuries.

More recently, the Hessen horse was also made into an extension of the Hanoverian herdbook. The northernmost region of Schleswig-Holstein has the Holsteiner, while Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has the Mecklenburger.
