- Hessen -
The Hessen horse breeding began at the courts of Hessen's dukes and princes, during the 15th century.

Hessian warmblood, located in the state of Hessen. Reliable sources for local breeds in Hessen do not exist. There was no state breeding based on the local farmers in the former centuries.

Hessen - most commonly bay, dark bay, and chestnut
*Highland - stallions cannot be registered with more white than a white star, any solid color
*Hinis - all common horse colors

Many pedigrees of modern Oldenburgs thus contain some of the best Hannoverian sires, such as Absatz, Gotthard, Grande, Der Lowe; such famous Trakehners as Hessenstein, Herbststurm, and Gunnar; ...

More recently, the Hessen horse was also made into an extension of the Hanoverian herdbook. The northernmost region of Schleswig-Holstein has the Holsteiner, while Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has the Mecklenburger.
