Highland ponies almost always have primitive markings: dorsal stripe down the back, stripes banding the legs, and shoulder stripes. They usually have dark points. They are the only British native breed to have these markings occur frequently.

The Highland horse has been used extensively throughout the course of history. Originally used by royalty as a symbol of status, both politically and economically, the Highland became even more popular in Scotland when pony-trekking was introduced.
