Big Horses

Shires are big horses. They can weigh, when they are full grown, between 2,240 and 2,688 lb. They areconsidered a supreme draft horse. The name Shire comes from the English shires of Lincoln, Leicester, Stafford, and Derby.

The horse pictured here is a half-Arabian gray pinto. The pinto markings are more difficult to spot due to the gray base coloring. This gelding is ridden primarily in hunter pleasure and jumping classes.

The horses are tough and frugal. Although sometimes unpredictable, they generally have a quiet temperament. Many have a natural ability to pace, possibly from the influence of the breeds of Central Asia.
