The Hungarian Coldblood is, in fact, not native to Hungary, but was developed from horse breeds brought over by borderland residents returning from Austria.

The Hungarian Warmblood or Hungarian Sport horse as it is also known was developed at the Mezohegyes State Stud in Hungary.

The Hungarian Horse can be traced back to the original people that settled the Carpathian basin 1,000 years ago called the Magyars. They were nomadic steppe people and descendants of the Huns so they carried a strong horse culture.

Most of the Hungarian horses were sent to Fort Reno, Oklahoma and Fort Robinson, Nebraska. Later, when the American Army Remount disbanded, these horses were scattered around the country in government dispersal sales.

The Hungarian Warmblood
The Hungarian Warmblood or Hungarian Sport Horse as it is also known was developed at the Mezöhegyes State Stud in Hungary.

The Hungarian Warmblood was first developed at the Mezohegyes State Stud in Hungary. The breed came about when the stud crossed other native Hungarian horses like the Nonius, Kisber Felver, Gidran and Furioso.

By 1529, the Ottomans had reached Vienna, where they were stopped by the Polish and Hungarian armies, who captured Arabians from the defeated Ottoman cavalry. These horses provided foundation stock for the major studs of eastern Europe.

The breed was developed 150-200 years ago on the famous military stud farms of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Percheron, Noriker, Hungarian half-bred stallions and Ardennes with the native Hungarian mares consisted of the foundation stock of this horse breed.

Today Lipizzans are found beyond the borders of what was once the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Before 1930 the Lipizzan horse did not exist within the United States.

The Hungarian King Louis II used a Friesian stallion on the battlefield on June 15, 1526.

The history of the breed begins from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a period in 18th century when these two countries had great horse breeding programs. They intended to produce horses with different skills for the citizens, nobility and the military.

The Shagya Arabian was developed as a cavalry horse for the famous Hungarian light cavalry. The origins of the breed lie in the Babolna stud in Hungary around 1816.
