Konik Horse
The Konik horse is a pony breed that originated from Poland. Konik means little horse in Polish. These horses have a remarkably long lifespan and high fertility. They are often cow-hocked.

Although the Polish Konik is not a true wild horse, they go directly back to the wild horse of eastern Europe, the Tarpan.

In 1936, professor Tadeusz Vetulani of Poznan University began attempts to breed the extinct tarpan back to its original state.

The Konik’s small size actually worked against the breed’s survival. At the start of the 19th Century, agriculture was an important part of daily life.

The konik (pl. koniki) is a small Polish horse, a kind of semi-wild pony.

Koniks have also been introduced in Latvia and the United Kingdom because of the success of such programs.

The Konik breed is often described as one of Poland's base breeds. "Konik" means "little horse". As the term suggests, the Konik is more horse than pony, even though it rarely exceeds 13 hands.

The Konik, which means 'little horse' in Polish, is a breed of ancient descent found mainly in the lowland farm areas of Poland, East of the San river, and also in other parts of Eastern Europe, to where it has been exported.

Konik
The konik is a small Polish horse, a kind of semi-wild pony. In Poland these horses are called koniks, this word comes from the Polish diminutive for a horse, but refers to several breeds.

Schweiken Ponies descend from the Konik Pony " a direct derivative of the primitive Tarpan. They inherit the Tarpan's extraordinary natural vigor and powers of endurance.

The Bosnian Pony is similar to the Hucul and Konik pony breeds. Commonly, this triad is known jointly as the Balkan breeds. All these breeds are considered to be primeval.

The origin is not exactly known, but most believe the Zhimd to be related to the Konik from Poland, most probably descended from the Tarpan. Most recently, Russian breeds have influenced the Zemaituka, as well as the light Polish breeds.

It is possible that another variant of the dun allele exists in some of the primitive breeds such as the Norwegian Fjord horses, the Konik and the Sorraia, and possibly existed in the Tarpan and Przewalski's horses.

The Bosnian Pony is of Tarpan origin and is like the Hucul and Konik. The Bosnian is the most numerous breed of the Balkan group of ponies and is widely spread from the Adriatic coast to the Black Sea and throughout former Yugoslavia.

History
Trakehners can be traced back to the Tarpan horse and its descendants of Konik and then Schweiken ponies. With the influence of Arab and Thoroughbred blood added the end result is a horse who is agile and tough with stamina and speed.
