The Lipizzan traces its history back to the early 1560's when the finest Arab and Berber blood was introduced into the local athletic Spanish Andalusians that were created during the Moorish occupation of Spain in the 7th Century.

The Lipizzan Horse
Much like Friesian horses, the Lipizzan horse is one of the most stunning breeds in today's equine world. Due to their almost exclusive breeding for performance, these horses are incontestably the masters of classical dressage.

Lipizzans are genetically a type of grey. Born dark, black-brown, brown, or mouse-grey, they gradually lighten until the white coat for which they are noted is produced somewhere between the ages of six and 10.

The breed is founded on Spanish horses, from which the Spanish Riding School takes its name. In the 16th century, High School riding became the fashionable thing for European courts.

Today, the breed is rare, with only about 3,000 horses registered. However, their numbers are increasing, with Lipizzaners bred around the world. The purebreds are excellent harness horses, as are the crossbreds.

Few breeds are as well known by both horse enthusiasts and the general public as the Lipizzan - no small feat considering there are just a few thousand registered Lipizzans worldwide.

The Lipizzaner is a very handsome horse of compact build, standing on average at 15 h.h. They have strong backs and quarters with splendid short strong legs. The head is small and curved in outline, with large, well set eyes.

Pictures like this one have made the Lipizzaner one of the best known breeds in the world. The displays of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna (and on tour) are always popular.
