The Lipizzan horses, or Lipizzaner, are very closely associated with what is called the Spanish Riding School, which is the oldest riding academy in the world.

The Lipizzaner gets its name from the Lipica stud in Slovenia, where the breed is originally from.

The Lipizzaner is a very handsome horse of compact build, standing on average at 15 h.h. They have strong backs and quarters with splendid short strong legs. The head is small and curved in outline, with large, well set eyes.

Pictures like this one have made the Lipizzaner one of the best known breeds in the world. The displays of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna (and on tour) are always popular.

Uses of Lipizzaner Horse
Historically, the Lipizzaner is a carriage horse and a good horse breed for dressage. It is especially famous for the 'Airs above the Ground' as performed at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.

The Lipizzaner's name was derived from the location in which it was first bred in 1580, the Imperial Stud at Lipizza, near Trieste.

The breed is founded on Spanish horses, from which the Spanish Riding School takes its name. In the 16th century, High School riding became the fashionable thing for European courts.
